The 4K for Cancer is a non-profit organization dedicated to uniting communities across the country in the fight against cancer.
The Organization
- The 4K was founded in 2001 by a group of students at Johns Hopkins University.
- Each year, a group of 4K riders embark on a cross-country cycling trip to spread awareness, raise funds and foster hope in the fight against cancer.
- In 2008, the 4K for Cancer became an independent non-profit organization.
- The 4K is led by an executive leadership team comprised of a Board of Directors and Advisory Board to oversee the strategic vision of the organization.
- Student leaders plan and execute the summer ride and utilize the executive leadership team for high-level counsel and strategic oversight.
- Each rider is responsible for raising and donating $4,500 each year.
The Summer Ride
- Each summer, 4K riders bike 4,000 miles across the country from Baltimore, MD to San Francisco, CA.
- Riders depart in the end of May from Baltimore, MD and end at the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco, CA in late July/early August.
- Riders average about 75 miles per day, ranging from 35 miles to 125 miles, depending on the terrain.
- The accommodations include local churches, community centers, and camping.
- Each rider is provided with basic equipment including a bike and team uniform.
- Riders volunteer throughout the year at the Baltimore Hope Lodge and across the country during the summer ride.
